Rakuten Symphony, Intel and Juniper Networks Introduce Next Generation Distributed RAN and Transport Solution
Intel Corporation, Juniper Networks, and Rakuten Symphony today announced a collaborative effort to develop Symware, a pioneering, carrier-grade Open RAN (Radio Access Network) solution for mobile network operators to modernize radio cell sites by leveraging the latest cloud-native architecture. This Symware multipurpose edge appliance provides operators with the flexibility to densify their network, accommodate various network topologies, and support new features while reducing the required hardware per site.

Mobile network operators around the world are starting to deploy Open RAN and cloud-native architecture in their networks, which will provide them greater agility, enable smarter security, and empower them with new levels of automation while broadening and securing their supply chain.

The Symware multipurpose edge appliance combines the containerized cell site routing functionality and a containerized Distributed Unit on a single general purpose server platform, which significantly reduces the capital and operating expenditures for an operator. Offering consistent carrier-grade routing stack across both physical and virtual Radio Access Networks, the solution readily enables 5G network slicing features both in RAN and transport domains including slice isolation, slice monitoring and dynamic traffic steering through segment routing. The solution supports automation with zero-touch provisioning, rolling updates, telemetry and analytics for all the components, and is based on the Kubernetes® ecosystem for orchestration and networking.

AMD Chips Give Clouds, Data Centers EPYC Power

AMD announced its latest EPYC data center processors with support from cloud providers, server manufactures, and software providers including IBM Cloud, Microsoft, Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), VMware, and others. The three processors, EPYC 7F32, EPYC 7F52, and EPYC 7F72, which have eight, 16, and 24 cores, respectively, are part of AMD’s second-generation EPYC chip family and target database, commercial high-performance computing (HPC), and hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) workloads. AMD says the new additions make EPYC the “world’s highest per core performance x86 server CPU.” Based on AMD internal and external tests comparing its EPYC processors to Intel’s Xeon Gold and Xeon Platinum chips, AMD claims its new processors offer up to 17% higher SQL Server performance, HCI with up to 47% higher VMmark score (using VMware’s vSAN as the storage tier in a 4-node cluster), and commercial HPC with up to 94% higher per core computational fluid dynamics.

VMware Claims SD-WAN Dominance Over Cisco

VMware today said it now has more than 15,000 Virtual Cloud Network customers, including 89 of the Fortune 100 and eight of the top 10 telecommunication operators. Specific to SD-WAN, which is one piece of the virtual networking stack, more than 225,000 branch offices have deployed VMware’s SD-WAN, said Tom Gillis, SVP and GM of VMware’s Networking and Security Business Unit. “We are the No. 1 vendor in SD-WAN,” Gillis said. VMware bases this claim on IHS Markit’s fourth-quarter 2019 SD-WAN market report, Frost and Sullivan’s 2019 data, and Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant for WAN Edge Infrastructure. This is the first time that VMware has disclosed something akin to an SD-WAN customer count.
