Verizon Provides SAP With Software-Defined Networking

SAP chose Verizon to provide a global network that uses software-defined networking (SDN). Verizon will consolidate and streamline SAP’s global network infrastructure for easier network management. SAP provides business applications to global enterprises. Historically, SAP’s in-house team looked after its IT real estate, supported by a variety of different technology companies, including Verizon. But now, it’s sending more work Verizon’s way, partly due to Verizon’s global reach. A SAP spokesperson said, “While SAP is not exclusively working with Verizon, they are one of our primary network infrastructure providers and will play a critical role in building SAP’s next-generation global network.” Verizon is providing Internet connectivity to connect SAP’s 30 data centers around the globe, along with its various offices. In addition, Verizon is providing SDN technology to support easier access to applications in the cloud. SDN will also give the business application company improved flexibility to adjust bandwidth depending on business conditions. The network upgrade comes as SAP has moved more of its business to the cloud. The company says a highly-available and secure network platform for connectivity is essential to running its global software-as-a-service (SaaS) business.
