Perforce to Acquire DevOps Pioneer Puppet

Perforce | April 11, 2022

Perforce
Perforce Software ("Perforce"), a provider of solutions to enterprise teams requiring productivity, visibility, and scale along the development lifecycle, backed by Francisco Partners and Clearlake Capital Group, L.P. (together with its affiliates, "Clearlake"), announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Puppet (or "the Company"), an infrastructure automation software platform which enables users to deliver, update, monitor, and secure software across physical and virtual machines. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

By increasing productivity, eliminating mistakes, enhancing security, and accelerating software delivery for DevOps teams, Puppet's solutions support customers on their digital transformation journeys. Puppet was an early developer of what is now referred to as "infrastructure-as-code." More than 40,000 organizations have benefited from Puppet's open source and commercial solutions as the Company's infrastructure automation technology provides solutions to strengthen its customers' security posture, compliance, and business resiliency beyond the data center to the cloud. Additionally, Puppet's annual State of DevOps Report is regarded as the informative source for updates on DevOps adoption and advancement across organizations by over 35,000 technical and managerial professionals polled via ten separate surveys since 2011.

"This acquisition expands our product offering by adding new capabilities for enterprise DevOps teams to manage and secure their critical infrastructure," said Mark Ties, CEO of Perforce. "With Puppet, we will be providing our customers with access to a product portfolio that enables them to drive innovation on a global scale. We look forward to welcoming the Puppet team and continuing to offer the level of customer support, services, and community Puppet has established in the market."

"Puppet has been in the DevOps space for over 15 years with a focus on infrastructure-as-code and operators. Going forward, however, we believe enterprise customers are looking for strategic partners who can provide more breadth and depth across the entire DevOps lifecycle. Integrating Puppet into Perforce does just that. As part of Perforce, we believe we will be better positioned to service the breadth of DevOps needs our customers have while accelerating our own innovation to ensure customers can deliver, operate and automate their infrastructures at scale in the data center, across clouds, and out to the edge."

 Yvonne Wassenaar, CEO of Puppet

The addition of Puppet builds on Perforce's existing DevOps portfolio, allowing Perforce to continue its focus on DevOps at scale and solve some of the most difficult automation challenges in the world's largest enterprises. Like Perforce, Puppet delivers solutions to some of the biggest companies in the world, including, as of year-end 2021, 85 percent of the world's largest banks and 80 percent of the world's top technology organizations. Together, the combined company will be helping to drive innovation at its combined customer base, which includes 40 companies of the Fortune 50.

"With this strategic acquisition, Perforce is positioned to capitalize on market tailwinds driving demand for IT infrastructure automation," said Evan Daar, Partner at Francisco Partners, and Sean Courtney, Senior Vice President at Clearlake, in a joint statement. "The addition of Puppet further enhances the capabilities Perforce can offer to its valued customers, and we look forward to catalyzing this opportunity to drive continued momentum for the platform."

The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2022.

Jefferies LLC acted as exclusive financial advisor to Puppet in connection with the transaction. Lincoln International acted as the exclusive financial advisor to Perforce Software in connection with the transaction.

Virtana Launches Kubernetes Support Strategy Across the Portfolio with Container Rightsizing in Infrastructure Monitoring and Cloud Cost Optimization

Virtana | September 08, 2022

Virtana, a leading provider of AI-driven solutions for hybrid cloud management and monitoring, announces a new Kubernetes strategy that will deliver container support across the full portfolio of Virtana Platform solutions. This strategy will deliver actionable infrastructure insights for optimal performance, cost, and capacity of business applications. The first deliverable of this strategy is a rightsizing feature for container environments through Virtana Platform's cloud cost optimization solution. With this capability, Virtana Platform users will have access to container rightsizing recommendations alongside ones for traditional compute — all within the Costs Savings Opportunities dashboard of Virtana Platform. Enterprises are increasingly adopting Kubernetes to accelerate software development, scale deployment, and enable faster digital transformation. Gartner® estimates1 that by 2026 more than 90% of global organizations will be running containerized applications in production (an increase from fewer than 40% in 2020). IDC reports2 that 80% of new workloads are being developed in containers. Given this rapid spike in Kubernetes usage, AWS and Azure users need a tool that provides cost savings for both traditional compute and containerized/serverless compute resources. As of today, most users do not appropriately constrain, monitor, or manage their Kubernetes containers, leading to excess spend and unpredictable performance. "There is a huge opportunity to unlock development speed, flexibility, and operational efficiency through container usage. "Yet many enterprises leveraging containers forget the basics of rightsizing and monitoring before and during development, leading to huge end of month bills and unnecessary cloud spend." Jon Cyr, Head of Product for Virtana Jon continued: "Virtana's strategy is to address the challenges that arise through a customer's cloud native journey. We offer the unique ability to trace the entire data path from container to compute, network, and storage." Virtana collects performance metrics from customers' container environments through the use of Prometheus, the leading open source monitoring tool for Kubernetes. Through Virtana Platform, the company then analyzes the metrics to provide insight and deliver prescriptive rightsizing recommendations for Amazon's Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) and Microsoft's Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) containers. From these recommendations, users can tailor the default rightsizing based on constraints for CPU and memory, to meet specific business requirements and risk tolerance. Key benefits of Virtana's cloud cost optimization Kubernetes feature: Rightsizes traditional compute and containers across multiple clouds in one tool Tune sizing based on organization's risk tolerance with what-if analysis that includes CPU and memory Automatically optimize instances with rightsizing recommendations Adjust to real-time changes in cloud service provider offerings to optimize cost structures Analyzes performance metrics using open source collection "Containers and Kubernetes are becoming popular technologies for cloud-native applications and have significantly grown in adoption during the past five years. Gartner estimates that more than one-third of enterprises are running containerized workloads in production and nearly 10% of total workloads run on containers today. Despite the apparent progress, the container ecosystem continues to be chaotic, fast paced and fragmented," said Arun Chandrasekaran and Wataru Katsurashima of Gartner in The Innovation Leader's Guide to Navigating the Cloud-Native Container Ecosystem. This new Kubernetes optimization feature will be available for all Virtana Platform customers with a Pro license, with additional configuration. Companies can try Virtana Platform's cloud cost management and optimization for free at virtana.com/optimize-free-tier. Free trial accounts are able to access this Kubernetes feature and view a limited number of recommendations. About Virtana Virtana provides a unified multi-cloud management platform to simplify the optimization, migration, and monitoring of application workloads across public, private, and hybrid cloud environments. The cloud-agnostic SaaS platform allows enterprises to efficiently plan their cloud migrations and then right size workloads across their hybrid cloud infrastructure for performance, capacity, and cost—most customers see 25% cloud cost savings or more within the first 10 days of use.

SoftIron Introduces HyperCloud, a Turnkey, Fully-integrated Intelligent Cloud Fabric™

SoftIron | September 07, 2022

SoftIron, the leader in purpose-built and performance-optimised data centre solutions, today announces its newest flagship offering, HyperCloud, the world's first fully turnkey, totally integrated and supported, Intelligent Cloud Fabric™. Designed and manufactured from the ground up by SoftIron in its own factories, HyperCloud is a fully-integrated platform that removes the complexity of integrating the many independent hardware and software layers needed to build and run a unified private or hybrid cloud. Using pre-integrated building blocks, HyperCloud fully automates the provisioning of storage, compute, networking and infrastructure services, providing a fully functioning, multi-tenant cloud that can be deployed in as little as half a day and less than half a rack and scale almost infinitely. The goal of an intelligent cloud fabric is to dramatically reduce the complexity of operating a resilient, multi-site hybrid cloud by providing stateless building blocks holistically designed and pre-integrated for assimilation by a distributed cloud orchestration control plane. Using these building blocks - the addition of more storage and/or compute resources becomes simply "plug and play." The result radically simplifies the architecting of a cloud, enabling operations teams to quickly empower application owners and data users to consume and manage services seamlessly across private and public resources. Independent of all public cloud vendors, HyperCloud enables IT generalists to build and operate highly sophisticated hybrid and/or multi-cloud infrastructures that operate with a level of reliability, availability, elasticity and serviceability previously available only to hyperscale cloud builders with specialist skills and access to large engineering teams. HyperCloud's modular nature, combined with the simplicity with which new compute and storage resources can be added, and the out-of-the-box secure multi-tenancy capabilities mean that the cloud fabric can be scaled up or down just in time, eliminating needless over-provisioning and reducing financial outlay. "Building and running clouds today is overly complex as engineers battle to integrate disparate layers of technology into a resilient, performant and scalable solution," said Kenny Van Alstyne, CTO for SoftIron. "It was time to take a step back and architect an entire platform, from the ground up, with the single task of making cloud consumable. HyperCloud removes the complexity of integrating the many independent hardware and software layers needed to build a cloud into a unified purpose-built fabric. With HyperCloud, you can deploy virtualised and containerised workloads across federated on-premises zones and public clouds, with support for secure multi-tenancy, full programmability, and full lifecycle automation all 'out of the box.' We're giving organisations sophisticated control of their cloud architecture, eliminating the need for complex integrations between multiple vendors and technologies while providing the ability to scale limitlessly as workloads demand, incrementally adding resource services as needed." "Public Cloud is popular because it creates a consumption-based experience hiding the complexity of operating a resilient, elastic infrastructure, and the sheer brute force of engineering that is needed to accomplish it - historically, that's only been possible at hyperscale. "It's a useful utility in your IT tool belt, but most organisations today want a hybrid model. Creating a complexity breakthrough required a totally new approach to deliver the first and only complete technology to be used specifically for building clouds. After a decade of innovation, HyperCloud realises that goal and will forever change expectations of how clouds can and should be built." Phil Straw, CEO of SoftIron "In today's highly competitive infrastructure market, we believe the team at SoftIron is developing and delivering innovative solutions to solve cloud complexity across the stack," said Daniel Newman, Principal Analyst and CEO of Futurum Research. "Leveraging its trusted supply chain hardware model, coupled with its comprehensive consumption-based offerings, we see a robust long-term growth trajectory for SoftIron as it focuses on meeting the rapidly shifting demands of enterprise IT." "We see many of our larger customers embarking on data repatriation projects, tired of the unpredictable egress fees being charged resulting from hosting their apps and data in the public cloud," commented Dev Tyagi, CSMO at SoftIron+Co channel partner, Boston Limited. "We're excited by HyperCloud from SoftIron and its ability to make these hybrid clouds a reality in what promises to be a fraction of the time and with a fraction of the skills needed." HyperCloud is available immediately from SoftIron and its partners in the SoftIron + Co. channel program. It is delivered fully capable with no additional licensing required to access any features, compute or storage capacity. About SoftIron® SoftIron makes the products that underpin the next evolution of IT infrastructure. Our blueprint is radical. Taking full control over design and manufacture of platforms optimised to transform IT infrastructure, our highly integrated products reduce space and energy footprints while delivering extraordinary performance. Challenging traditional IT manufacturing and organisational strategy, we've developed a model that enables us to create a more resilient and connected business for the customers we serve. A commitment to openness, transparency, and simplicity helps address emerging multi-faceted threats while eliminating the vendor "lock-in" so common elsewhere.
