Open Source Leader the Eclipse Foundation Launches Vendor-Neutral Operating System for Next-Generation Device Interoperability

The Eclipse Foundation, an European open source foundation, furthering the recently announced cooperation with the OpenAtom foundation, announced today the launch of the Oniro project and working group.

Oniro aspires to become a transparent, vendor-neutral and independent alternative to established IoT and edge operating systems. To achieve this goal and ensure Oniro has a global reach, the Eclipse Foundation and its members will deliver a compatible independent implementation of OpenHarmony, an open source operating system specified and hosted by the OpenAtom Foundation.

“Oniro is open source done right,” said Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation. “It represents a unique opportunity to develop and host a next-generation operating system to support the future of mobile, IoT, machine economy, edge and many other markets.”

With the creation of the Oniro top-level project, the Eclipse Foundation aims to strengthen the global technology ecosystem, while bringing a vendor-neutral, open source OS to the global market. To facilitate the governance for the Oniro device ecosystem, the Eclipse Foundation is also launching a new dedicated working group. The Eclipse Foundation’s working group structure provides the vendor neutrality and legal framework that enables transparent and equal collaboration between companies.

AT&T will Operate its Mobility Network on Microsoft's Azure for Operators cloud, Enabling it to Offer Cost-Effective 5G Services at Scale

AT&T plans to move its 5G mobile network to the Microsoft cloud. This strategic partnership paves the way for all of AT&T's mobile network traffic to be handled using Microsoft Azure technologies. AT&T's 5G core, the software at the heart of the 5G network that links mobile users and IoT devices to the internet and other services, will be the first to be used. By moving existing and future network workloads to Azure for Operators, AT&T will be able to improve productivity and cost efficiency while concentrating on delivering large-scale network services that meet the changing requirements of its customers. In exchange, Microsoft will get access to AT&T's intellectual property and technical expertise to expand its flagship telecom product, Azure for Operators. Microsoft is acquiring AT&T's carrier-grade Network Cloud platform technology, which is the foundation of AT&T's 5G core network. Since the company's 5G debut in 2018, AT&T's Network Cloud platform has been operating AT&T's 5G core at scale. This move delivers real-world production 5G workloads for operators to Azure. Ceragon to Renew & Maintain the Wireless Transport Network Infrastructure for RAI WAY, Italy's National TV and Radio Network Provider

Huawei Retains Leadership in 5G RAN Portfolio

Huawei's 5G RAN portfolio has been ranked a leader for the third year in a row in GlobalData's recent H2 2021 report 5G RAN: Competitive Landscape Assessment. This report is released every six months to evaluate the competitive advantages of 5G RAN products from major RAN vendors. In the H2 2021 report, Huawei's product portfolio outclassed its competitors in all four criteria: radio unit portfolio breadth, baseband unit (BBU) capacity, ease of installation, and technological evolution. In terms of radio unit portfolio breadth, Huawei's radio product range greatly facilitates ubiquitous 5G gigabit experiences. Through continuous innovation, Huawei has amassed various advantages that allow it to deploy across different scenarios and spur the industry forward. For example, MetaAAU improves both coverage and energy efficiency, BladeAAU Pro simplifies 5G deployment at sites with limited antenna space, 400MHz ultra-wideband AAU allows operators to utilize fragmented spectrum and construct shared multi-operator networks, and sub-3 GHz 4T-8T-Massive MIMO multi-antenna ultra-wideband products improve spectral and energy efficiency while reducing costs.
