In the end, what enterprises really want is a way to run any application on any cloud at any time. And Equinix, which operates one of the largest networks of datacenters on the planet, is hoping to make that happen. Over the past two decades, Equinix has steadily expanded the number of its facilities and its global reach to where it now has more than 200 facilities in more than 55 markets around the world. The company also has adapted to the rise of public clouds and other trends that are reshaping the IT industry. Key to this has been Platform Equinix, the mesh of datacenters created by interconnecting of all these datacenters – those owned by Equinix, the big clouds, and other service providers

ARE COMPANIES INVESTING TOO MUCH IN DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE?

Article | April 27, 2020

Data science and big data analytics have become the new must-haves for businesses across many industries. Gone are the days when algorithm development and large-scale data mining were confined to Silicon Valley. In the modern, tech-savvy age, it’s almost an afterthought that banks, insurance brokerages, healthcare entities, and other non-tech-sector companies seek to be “the next Apple/Google/Amazon” or whatever tech behemoth completes the C-suite’s bromide. This is true not just in word, but in deed.

Infrastructure as code vs. platform as code

Article | April 27, 2020

With infrastructure as code (IaC), you write declarative instructions about compute, storage and network requirements for the infra and execute it. How does this compare to platform as code (PaC) and what did these two concepts develop in response to? In its simplest form, the tech stack of any application has three layers — the infra layer containing bare metal instances, virtual machines, networking, firewall, security etc.; the platform layer with the OS, runtime environment, development tools etc.; and the application layer which, of course, contains your application code and data. A typical operations team works on the provisioning, monitoring and management of the infra and platform layers, in addition to enabling the deployment of code.

A new era of automation with Cisco ACI and the Citrix ADC Manager app

Article | April 27, 2020

Since it was first available, Citrix has worked with Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) to integrate Citrix ADC with the Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC). As a valued technology partner, Citrix has a device package — a software module — that enables users to configure the Citrix ADC directly from a Cisco APIC. This setup has run in many customer production environments over the years. Let’s consider one of those customers — Jim. He was the first to deploy the integrated solution in his data center. The solution gave him the automation he needed and a single view to configure, deploy, and manage applications. However, his application admins preferred to use the Citrix ADC user interface to manage L4-L7 services.

We Need to Talk About ‘Cloud Neutrality’

Article | April 27, 2020

We spent a lot of years talking about net neutrality the idea that the companies that provide access to the internet shouldn’t unfairly block, slow down, or otherwise interfere with traffic even if that traffic competes with their services. But there’s an even bigger issue brewing, and it’s time to start talking about it: cloud neutrality. “While its name sounds soft and fluffy,” Microsoft president and general counsel Brad Smith and coauthor Carol Ann Browne write in their recent book, Tools and Weapons: The Promise and the Peril of the Digital Age, “in truth the cloud is a fortress.” Their introduction describes the modern marvel of the data center: a 2 million-square-foot, climate-controlled facility made up of colossal electrical generators, diesel fuel tanks, battery arrays, and bulletproof doors
