Last winter I wrote an enterprise storage dictionary for non-experts, and now it's time for a data center version. The following are a dozen of the less-understood terms you'll hear in the field. Post in the comments if you have suggestions for terms that should be on this list. ASHRAE is the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. It's a trade group, but the relevant parts are Technical Committee 1.5 (Computer Applications) and Technical Committee 9.9 (Mission Critical Facilities, Data Centers, Technology Spaces and Electronic Equipment).

5 TIPS TO ENSURE NETWORK SECURITY OF INTERNAL IT INFRASTRUCTURE

Article | May 3, 2021

What Is IT Infrastructure Security? If you are reading this blog, we would like to assume that you are either an aspiring cybersecurity professional or a business owner looking for ways to improve their network security. A business IT infrastructure includes networks, software, hardware, equipment, and other facilities that make up an IT network. These networks are applied to establish, monitor, test, manage, deliver, and support IT services. So, IT infrastructure security describes the process of safeguarding the core networking infrastructure, and it is typically applied to enterprise IT environments. You can improve IT infrastructure security by installing protective solutions to block unauthorized access, theft, deletion, and data modification.

SASE as a Business Continuity Solution

Article | April 9, 2020

As offices worldwide sit abandoned, many of the millions of employees ordered to stay home are actually keeping hard at work, taking advantage of residential broadband connections, VPNs, email, video conferencing, and instant messaging applications to do their jobs. Thank the corporate world’s willingness to let employees occasionally work from home for the necessary IT infrastructure. However, as much as we’d like this alone to solve the business continuity challenges, enabling a handful of employees to work from home once a week is trivial compared to ensuring all of a company’s employees can do so for months on end.

5 Essential Principles for Managing SD-Branch Security

Article | March 5, 2020

Software-defined wide-area networking (SD-WAN) is revolutionizing the way that local branches are managed. As we’ve previously pointed out in our article on 4 things you should know about SD-Branch, it is being used to enable faster cloud adoption and greatly improve centralized control over the systems running in branch offices. Unfortunately, these advantages also come with some downsides. As SD-WAN has developed in SD-Branch, the number of IoT and end-user devices connected to these networks has grown exponentially. This means that the surface attack area of the average SD-Branch setup has increased enormously over the past few years. At the same time, business-critical applications are now sharing more data than ever over broadband internet connections, exposing critical data to interception or disruption.

ARE COMPANIES INVESTING TOO MUCH IN DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE?

Article | April 27, 2020

Data science and big data analytics have become the new must-haves for businesses across many industries. Gone are the days when algorithm development and large-scale data mining were confined to Silicon Valley. In the modern, tech-savvy age, it’s almost an afterthought that banks, insurance brokerages, healthcare entities, and other non-tech-sector companies seek to be “the next Apple/Google/Amazon” or whatever tech behemoth completes the C-suite’s bromide. This is true not just in word, but in deed.
