Chernobyl’s lessons for critical-infrastructure cybersecurity

CHERNOBYL EXCLUSION ZONE, Ukraine—The stray dog looking directly at me was hard to resist. Her ears perked up, her fur appeared clean—free of mange, at any rate—and she held a large stick firmly between her jaws. She looked like a good dog. She wanted to be petted or, at least, have someone wrestle the stick from her—perhaps throw it so she could retrieve it. But because we met near Cafe Desyatka, in the woods of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, a 1,004-square-mile region slightly smaller than Yosemite National Park that surrounds the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, looking but not touching was probably the safer choice. I was less worried about how irradiated she might be than about whether she had rabies. According to a 2017 estimate by the United States–based nonprofit Clean Futures Fund, this dog was one of hundreds of strays living in the Exclusion Zone, near the power plant, and in the abandoned cities of Chernobyl and Pripyat, which once housed the nuclear facility’s employees. The organization offers aid to communities decimated by industrial accidents, and that includes caring for the Chernobyl dogs, many of whom die young due to malnourishment, disease, predators, harsh weather, a lack of shelter, and Chernobyl’s notorious environmental contamination.

Understand the role of infrastructure as code in DevOps

Article | February 28, 2020

Infrastructure as code plays a prominent role in enterprise DevOps shops. Use this chapter excerpt to understand why -- and to learn the basics of some common IaC tools. As technology evolves at a faster and faster pace, collaboration between teams, such as development and IT operations, becomes increasingly important to satisfy end user and business demands. DevOps aims to foster that collaboration, as well as improve application deployment times and quality. To succeed with DevOps, however, IT teams must be open to change. "DevOps is a culture different from traditional corporate cultures and requires a change in mindset, processes, and tools," writes Mikael Krief in the book Learning DevOps: The complete guide to accelerate collaboration with Jenkins, Kubernetes, Terraform and Azure DevOps.

The critical role of Internet of Things infrastructure in connecting all of our devices

Article | February 20, 2020

The Internet of Things (IoT) will fundamentally change all industries, from agriculture to transportation to healthcare. In the next few decades, nearly everything in our world will become connected. But with that increased connectivity comes several concerns. For example, the IoT will generate immense amounts of data, which will put pressure on the Internet and force us to come up with more efficient ways to transmit and store this data. Perhaps chief among these concerns are the infrastructure considerations as other sectors grow thanks to the IoT. Below, we've outlined the future of IoT infrastructure management, along with some IoT infrastructure companies that are leading the way.

A new era of automation with Cisco ACI and the Citrix ADC Manager app

Article | February 12, 2020

Since it was first available, Citrix has worked with Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) to integrate Citrix ADC with the Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC). As a valued technology partner, Citrix has a device package — a software module — that enables users to configure the Citrix ADC directly from a Cisco APIC. This setup has run in many customer production environments over the years. Let’s consider one of those customers — Jim. He was the first to deploy the integrated solution in his data center. The solution gave him the automation he needed and a single view to configure, deploy, and manage applications. However, his application admins preferred to use the Citrix ADC user interface to manage L4-L7 services.
