Building a Terraform Infrastructure

What is Terraform? Terraform is an ‘infrastructure as code’ software developed by HashiCorp. Terraform lets users apply a high-level configuration language or code to define a datacentre/infrastructure. A configuration file is created and from that configuration file, we can create an execution plan to build the infrastructure in cloud solutions such as those offered by AWS, OpenStack, Microsoft Azure, or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. The configuration file describes to Terraform the components that are needed. The config file can run either a single application or an entire infrastructure because executing the configuration file builds the desired infrastructure in the required platform. An execution plan describing the desired state is then generated, which is subsequently implemented to incorporate all the components of the configuration file into the described infrastructure. When the configuration is changed, terraform identifies those changes and then creates an incremental execution plan. Only these changes can be applied, and the changed components can be built.

New Ransomware Targets Critical Infrastructure in 2020

Article | March 31, 2020

Critical infrastructure, like power and water systems, face a number of cyber-security threats. Traditional ransomware variants can bring these systems down by encrypting files that are vital to their operation. However, a new variant poses an even greater risk to critical infrastructure. The Ekans ransomware is designed specifically to take down critical services, making anti-ransomware protection even more important in these environments. Ransomware is a well-known threat made famous by the WannaCry worm. The success of the 2017 WannaCry outbreak has inspired a rash of attacks and new ransomware variants in recent years.

Benefits of Kubernetes on bare metal cloud infrastructure

Article | March 3, 2020

Bare metal cloud infrastructure is being introduced to run 5G applications in containers. This is a natural development of the shift the industry is going through from virtualized network functions to cloud native applications. But what are the benefits of running Kubernetes on a bare metal cloud infrastructure compared to a virtualized infrastructure? Let’s start with a brief recap on cloud native and CNCF – Cloud Native Computing Foundation. With the introduction of 5G, new use cases drive the need for designing applications based on containers and service-based architecture to address some technology gaps associated with virtualization. The most important technology gaps involve smoother software upgrades, automation and the realization of a CI/CD software pipeline to end customers.

Fiber Optic vs Copper Cables: How Do They Compare?

Article | March 9, 2020

Fiber Optic and Copper are pretty much the only options when it comes to networking communications cables. Today we focus on what makes them different. Let’s begin with the key characteristics of the old reliable copper phone lines — the same basic infrastructure that we’ve been using since the beginning of the 20th-century. Copper is highly conductive. This is what makes it so great for carrying the power to your home. Copper wires use the movement of electrons to carry signals by modulating a waveform at one end then demodulating it at the other end. And converting the patterns in the waveform into an analog or digital signal.

ARE COMPANIES INVESTING TOO MUCH IN DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE?

Article | April 27, 2020

Data science and big data analytics have become the new must-haves for businesses across many industries. Gone are the days when algorithm development and large-scale data mining were confined to Silicon Valley. In the modern, tech-savvy age, it’s almost an afterthought that banks, insurance brokerages, healthcare entities, and other non-tech-sector companies seek to be “the next Apple/Google/Amazon” or whatever tech behemoth completes the C-suite’s bromide. This is true not just in word, but in deed.
