Big Data on Microsoft Azure: from Insights to Action

More than 100 years after it was written, this observation by fictional sleuth Sherlock Holmes still rings true. Businesses today rarely act – or even contemplate an action – without analyzing troves of data. They can make good use of data, in part, because technology has democratized the processes that bring information to the end user. Data is no longer gathered only by research companies and delivered in expensive, structured reports. Now, data gathering has been commoditized to the point where small, as well as large, companies can ingest huge amounts of unstructured data from mobile, web and IoT interfaces, and manage it in the cloud.

PACKET PUTS AN EDGE ON EQUINIX

Article | March 18, 2020

In the end, what enterprises really want is a way to run any application on any cloud at any time. And Equinix, which operates one of the largest networks of datacenters on the planet, is hoping to make that happen. Over the past two decades, Equinix has steadily expanded the number of its facilities and its global reach to where it now has more than 200 facilities in more than 55 markets around the world. The world is ready for 5G. Are you?

Article | March 18, 2020

At last, the wait for 5G is nearly over. As this map shows, coverage is widespread across much of the U.S., in 24 EU countries, and in pockets around the globe. The new wireless standard is worth the wait. Compared to 4G, the new wireless standard can move more data from the edge, with less latency. And connect many more users and devices—an important development given that the IDC estimates 152,000 new Internet of Things (IoT) devices per minute by 2025. Put it together, and 5G is a game-changing backhaul for public networks. (Wi-Fi 6, often mentioned in the same breath as 5G, is generally used for private WANs.

The right IT infrastructure is hybrid

Article | March 18, 2020

From time to time, we invite industry thought leaders to share their opinions and insights on current technology trends on the IBM Systems IT Infrastructure blog. The opinions in these posts are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of IBM. Gartner forecasts worldwide public cloud revenue will grow 17 percent in 2020[1]. While it’s clear that cloud is still being rapidly adopted, on premises and private cloud are growing as well. My team and I see this on a daily basis as we visit with enterprise clients. To quantify this information and measure its impact, IBM recently commissioned Forrester Consulting to evaluate how organizations develop and implement their IT infrastructure strategies. Forrester conducted an online survey of 350 global enterprise IT decision makers across industries to explore this topic.

Why IBM Power Systems means business for SAP

Article | March 18, 2020

As SAP customers consider the hybrid cloud model for their mission-critical applications, they need flexibility and choice in deployments. IBM Power Systems is known for its flexibility, powered by the largest SAP HANA virtualized server scalability[1]. Today, we are further extending this flexibility with the announcement of SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud on IBM Power Systems. To enable this, SAP will place IBM POWER9 servers in SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (SAP HEC) data centers to give their clients the ability to run their workloads wherever they want across the private or hybrid cloud model. The availability of IBM Power Systems in a SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud environment is a great testimony of the value that IBM Power Systems brings to SAP clients on their digital transformation journey.
