Is your Wi-Fi 5G? How about your AT&T phone? Doesn't 5G require new cell towers, like, everywhere? No, no, and no. Confusing branding and marketing have been combining several similar terms, in some cases innocently and in some cases on purpose. Let's start by quickly answering some questions you might have: Your home router has 5GHz Wi-Fi. Your router isn't 5G cellular, the new system wireless carriers are installing now. "5G E," which will appear in your 4G AT&T phone's status bar soon, also isn't 5G cellular. People who say that 5G cellular is millimeter-wave are half wrong. 5G cellular will require new phones, appearing in 2019 and 2020. Okay, now let's explain what 5G, 5G E, and 5GHz Wi-Fi have to do with each other.

How to Rapidly Scale IT Infrastructure For Remote Workers

Article | April 13, 2020

Rapid IT infrastructure scaling is always challenging. In March 2020, the coronavirus caused a surge in remote workers as organizations switched overwhelmingly to work-from-home policies. Scaling IT infrastructure to support this sudden shift proved to be a struggle for IT teams, resulting in a migration to cloud-based applications and solutions, a rush on hardware that can support a remote environment, and challenges scaling VPNs to support remote worker security. Here are some of the insights and lessons learned from IT professionals.

Benefits of Kubernetes on bare metal cloud infrastructure

Article | March 3, 2020

Bare metal cloud infrastructure is being introduced to run 5G applications in containers. This is a natural development of the shift the industry is going through from virtualized network functions to cloud native applications. But what are the benefits of running Kubernetes on a bare metal cloud infrastructure compared to a virtualized infrastructure? Let’s start with a brief recap on cloud native and CNCF – Cloud Native Computing Foundation. With the introduction of 5G, new use cases drive the need for designing applications based on containers and service-based architecture to address some technology gaps associated with virtualization. The most important technology gaps involve smoother software upgrades, automation and the realization of a CI/CD software pipeline to end customers.

Edge computing environments: what you need to know

Article | March 24, 2020

The saying goes: “If you’re not on the edge, you’re taking up too much space”. And compute itself is now moving to the edge, forcing datacentre operators to wring the last drops of productivity from their infrastructure, ahead of a future supporting multi-sensor internet of things (IoT) devices over 5G for machine learning, and even artificial intelligence (AI). Jennifer Cooke, research director of cloud-to-edge datacentre trends at IDC, says datacentre operators need to start thinking about how many systems they will need to roll out, and the people they will need to support them. “Cost becomes the prohibitive factor,”

Protecting Healthcare Data and Infrastructure

Article | April 2, 2020

The healthcare industry is increasingly targeted by cybercriminals. As digital transformation accelerates and more providers move their internal systems to the cloud, deploy IoT medical devices and host medical records online, they become even more vulnerable. Over the past four years, nearly 1,500 healthcare companies have been hit with ransomware attacks, and the threat is unlikely to go away. Healthcare data is just too valuable a commodity on the black market for cybercriminals to pass up. In 2019, health organizations continued to get hit with data breaches and ransomware attacks, costing the sector an estimated $4 billion.
