3 Ways 5G Will Disrupt Driver Safety

| March 13, 2019

Every day, drivers take significant risks when getting behind the wheel. And with the rise of 5G, it seems the stakes are getting higher. But what if our addictive mobile devices, and the data they utilize, made us safer while on the road? 5G is coming to a world caught in the middle of a massive distracted driving epidemic. An epidemic that has been difficult to measure, and as a result, significantly underreported. The results of our last distracted driving study showed the problem to be 100 times worse than the best government data. 69-million drivers use their phones behind the wheel every day, and that’s only in the United States.

Rethinking How We Measure IT Infrastructure Value

Article | February 28, 2020

Planning needs a rethink. Else, IT leaders risk hobbling their companies’ growth potential or becoming blindsided by risks. For many, justifying an IT decision to the CFO or the Board begins with a business case. Often, they use the total cost of ownership (TCO) to convince. Using return on investment (ROI) goes a step further than IT costs and savings, and looks at user efficiency and business effectiveness. Both measures fall short on correctly highlighting the true impact to the business of an enabling technology or infrastructure. Either the metric is too narrow, the timeline is too short, or the investment is not mature enough. It warrants a more holistic approach that looks at multiple aspects of risks, costs and benefits, and compares different components of ROI.

Cartesi creates Linux infrastructure for blockchain DApps

Article | April 20, 2020

DApps (sometimes called Dapps) are from the blockchain universe and so, logically, the apps part stands for application (obviously) and the D part stands for decentralised (only obvious once you know that we’re talking distributed immutable language here). According to the guides section at blockgeeks, DApps are open source in terms of code base, incentivised (in terms of who validates it) and essentially decentralised so that all records of the application’s operation must be stored on a public and decentralised blockchain to avoid pitfalls of centralisation. So then, Cartesi is a DApp infrastructure that runs an operating system (OS) on top of blockchains. The company has now launched a more complete ‘platform-level’ offering, which is described as a layer-2 solution

Data Security in the Cloud Best Practices

Article | April 8, 2020

Data security in the cloud best practices include: understanding and implementing security fundamentals, securing cloud infrastructure along the shared responsibility model, encrypting data in the cloud, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations. Data security fundamentals often come back to the CIA Triad: data confidentiality, data integrity, and data availability. The shared responsibility model refers to the idea that both a cloud provider and the organization using the cloud are responsible for ensuring the overall security of the organization’s cloud infrastructure, including the data housed there.

The right IT infrastructure is hybrid

Article | March 4, 2020

From time to time, we invite industry thought leaders to share their opinions and insights on current technology trends on the IBM Systems IT Infrastructure blog. The opinions in these posts are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of IBM. Gartner forecasts worldwide public cloud revenue will grow 17 percent in 2020[1]. While it’s clear that cloud is still being rapidly adopted, on premises and private cloud are growing as well. My team and I see this on a daily basis as we visit with enterprise clients. To quantify this information and measure its impact, IBM recently commissioned Forrester Consulting to evaluate how organizations develop and implement their IT infrastructure strategies. Forrester conducted an online survey of 350 global enterprise IT decision makers across industries to explore this topic.
