While there is a lot of attention on SDN architecture at Layer 1 through 3 of the networking stack, L4-L7 Services are an equally important component of a Software Defined Infrastructure. Services could be envisioned as applications, however some could be fundamental to the success of the solution. Services such as security, load balancing, WAN optimization etc. are critical components of today's IT infrastructure. Any SDN deployment would be incomplete and limited in its impact without addressing the service and application layers of the protocol stack.
